3. Home School Digest Journal Subscriptions I have personally subscribed the Home School Digest Journal in the past and was blessed by the articles. They are now offering the Home School Digest Journal for "whatever you can afford" (see below.) ~ Dawn Opsal, Lake George We have been very concerned about the strain that the poor economy is placing on our readers. Many families are struggling just to make ends meet and have virtually nothing left at the end of the month. We have also experienced the effects of these inflationary costs in the rising expense of printing and shipping of our magazines. However, after much prayer and seeking the Lord, we are taking a step of faith. We do NOT want a lack of funds to keep ANYONE from receiving the spiritual and practical encouragement of our magazines. If you have been wanting to receive: An Encouraging Word Magazine (for Christian Women of all ages) Home School Digest Journal (Family Discipleship magazine) Brush Arbor Quarterly Magazine (on Revival and Deeper Life) but have been hindered because of finances, please do not let that stand in your way. We are making these three magazines available to you for literally WHATEVER YOU CAN AFFORD! Please help us get the word out about this offer to your friends and family members who would benefit from our publications. Prayerfully consider forwarding this email to your email list, posting it on your blog, printing it out for your church bulletin board, or giving it out at your next small group or homeschool meeting. To subscribe for WHATEVER YOU CAN AFFORD, please visit http://www.WisdomsGate.com or call 1-800-343-1943. Please pray for us as we embrace this new act of obedience to God's direction for our ministry. 6. Non-paper MACHE Announcements WWII History Buffs: Input Needed Hello homeschooled WWII history buffs! I'm a homeschooling mom whose boys have been involved in the restoration of WWII vehicles at the Fort Snelling Military Museum (FSMM). I am working on developing preparation material for homeschool children who will visit the Fort Snelling Military Museum of Minnesota. This museum is dedicated to remembering the veterans of all wars and preserving the equipment they used. The artifacts include the trucks, tanks, jeeps etc. that the “all volunteer” staff restores. The FSMM is unique in that it can travel to many venues. You may have seen the artifacts at the Old Fort Snelling, VFW's, local schools, or driving in parades, The museum is especially interested in offering a "before you visit" sheet for homeschooled children, which would be linked to the website: www.fsmm.org. · Homeschooled Students: If you would like to help with this project 1. Visit the website 2. Send me questions you would like addressed if you were to visit the museum or see the artifacts. Homeschooling Mom: Please tell me what you would want included in a preparation sheet. If you have any questions, please contact me (Amy Pahr) at: up2pahr@usfamily.net.

------------------------------------------------------ Financial Literacy Challenge Includes Scholarship Offer – Deadline May 15th From: HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association) [NOTE: The following announcement is limited to HSLDA members. However, MACHE is including the announcement as an encouragement for MACHE members to seriously consider joining HSLDA. For details about the many HSLDA benefits and membership cost, please visit www.hslda.org. MACHE members are eligible for a discount on their HSLDA membership. ~ Ed.] We would like to announce another HSLDA membership benefit. We recently learned the U.S. Department of the Treasury has started a new initiative, the National Financial Literacy challenge. This recognition program uses a voluntary, online test to determine and recognize high levels of financial literacy among America's high school students in public, private, and homeschool programs. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has asked for HSLDA's help in getting this test into the hands of homeschoolers. Students scoring in the top 25th percentile of the nation's scores will be recognized by the U.S. Treasury Department. This recognition is competitive, and will look very good on a job resume or high school transcript. The nation's top-scoring students may be eligible for additional recognition, including the possibility of college scholarship funds from one of the nation's leading corporate foundations. Please go to http://www.hslda.org/contests/nflc.asp. Using your HSLDA member ID, sign in to obtain the teacher access code for homeschool programs. You can then register for the test. Students must be at least 13 years old to participate, and the test must be taken before May 16, 2008. There are no prerequisites for student participation, and there is no charge to participate.

------------------------------------------------- Do Hard Things Teen Conference with Alex and Brett Harris – June 21st (Minneapolis) From: Seth and Ian Willard WHAT: A one day conference designed to motivate young people to rebel against the low expectations of their culture and to avoid wasting the teen years by doing hard things that really matter. Our generation is ready to rethink what teens are capable of doing and becoming. Once wrong ideas are debunked and cleared away, our generation is quick to choose a better way, even if it's more difficult. The teen years aren't a vacation from responsibility. They are the training ground for future leaders who dare to be responsible now...and this one-of-a-kind teen conference will show you how. WHEN: Saturday, June 21st (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) WHERE: Minneapolis Convention Center COST: Pre-registration: $30 teens, $20 adults (by June 14th) Register at the door: $35 teens, $25 adults The Speakers Alex and Brett Harris are 19-year-old Christian teenagers with a passion for God and their generation. They are the founders of TheRebelution.com, and authors of Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations. They write frequently for Focus on the Family's Boundless Webzine, and are the younger brothers of best-selling author Joshua Harris (I Kissed Dating Goodbye). Gregg Harris is a Christian husband and father of seven. He is an internationally recognized author and conference speaker whose work has helped to start the Christian homeschooling movements in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Mexico. Beginning in 1981, his workshops helped to launch over 180,000 families into teaching their children at home. Promo video and registration information available at http://www.therebelution.com/conference

------------------------------------------------ New Book Includes Minnesota Homeschooled Teenagers From: LEARN at Home/Loving Education And Responsible Nurturing We are excited to announce that a new motivational book for teenagers includes a story about brothers Seth and Ian Willard, homeschooled sons of Lloyd and Tanya Willard of Miltona. Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris encourages young people to rebel against low expectations and attempt to do what seems impossible. The book exposes the culture's low expectations that are robbing teenagers of their full potential, and explains how to reclaim the teen years as the launching pad of a successful life. Using true stories from teens around the world, Do Hard Things illustrates five kinds of hard things ambitious young people often encounter. These include hard things that 1) Take you outside your comfort zone; 2) Go beyond what's required; 3) Are too big to accomplish alone; 4) Don't pay off immediately; and 5) Go against the crowd. Seth and Ian's story is used to illustrate hard things that take you out of your comfort zone. It tells how they became involved in a local political race which led to campaigning, working at the State Capitol, and the formation of the Knute Nelson Generation Joshua Club, a civics education club for homeschooled students. Seth and Ian (now ages 20 and 18, respectively) hope their story, along with the others in the book, encourages teenagers to attempt daunting tasks, embrace challenges, and strive for excellence. Alex and Brett Harris, sons of homeschooling pioneers Gregg and Sono Harris, are 19-year-old twin writers of a popular teen blog called The Rebelution. They will be at the Minneapolis Convention Center on June 21 to present the Do Hard Things message in a seminar for Christian teens and their parents. For more information about the conference or book, visit www.DoHardThings.com. Do Hard Things is available at Cherry Street Books in Alexandria

----------------------------------------------- Help Make New Homeschool Study a Success in Minnesota From: J. Michael Smith, HSLDA President HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association), in partnership with NHERI (National Home Education Research Institute) and four testing services BJU Press (www.bjupress.com), Family Learning Organization (www.familylearning.org), Piedmont Education Services (www.pesdirect.com), and Seton Testing Services (www.setonhome.org), is conducting the largest study on homeschool academic achievement ever attempted. Many state leaders have expressed their support for this initiative and have also asked whether the results can be reported by state. The answer is yes, but if the sample size is not sufficient from a particular state then those results will be of less value for that state. You can participate in the study by ordering a test this year from one of the aforementioned testing services. The greater the number of homeschool families that participate from Minnesota the more valuable the results will be for showing how homeschoolers in our state perform. You can access more information on the study by visiting: http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/200803310.asp This is an announcement which was included in the "NonPaper MACHE," an e-mail announcement bulletin provided as a service to MACHE members. You may receive this bulletin which is sent the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month by becoming a member of MACHE. Annual membership with MACHE is $35. Benefits for members include a comprehensive handbook designed especially for the Minnesota home educating family, a 20-page bimonthly newsletter, legislative and legal updates, discounts for conferences and HSLDA membership, and more... Go to www.mache.org or e-mail info@mache.org for more information. 7. Dianne Craft Methods Os possible. I have been in ongoing communication with Dianne since the conference regarding setting up an online community to provide support for those using her methods. She asked if I would start a group and she would happily join to try to answer questions there as often aoup/diannecraftsupport/ I received this email from Dianne today in regards to the new group: "I will be happy to participate in this group, and direct parents to answers as much as time allows me.
